Uber unveils plans to demo flying cars by 2020

A sign is seen during a news conference to announce Uber resumes ride-hailing service in Taipei

The past few months have been tough on Uber, with CEO Travis Kalanick recently having to deflect questions about his own leadership, particularly in the wake of news that the ride-sharing service's app was almost banned from iOS devices.

In early, small-scale operations, the company believes it can achieve costs of $1.32 per passenger miles, slightly higher than taking UberX over the same distance, Uber's Holden said. Uber aims to launch an Uber Elevate Network demonstration at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. These companies primarily specialize in building small electric aircrafts and will work with Uber to build ones specifically for densely populated areas. The company isn't building any of the hardware, and instead will rely on aircraft manufacturers such as Aurora Flight Sciences, Pipistrel Aircraft, Embraer, Mooney, and Bell Helicopter to build the flying taxis.

Uber has been reeling from executive departures and accusations of sexual harassment at its workplace.

Uber's agreement with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority calls for a joint study into pricing models, people movement and determining where routes should be created in the city. Though hefty spending on flying vehicle programs comes at a time some investors are cutting on what they are willing to spend on the shares of the privately held firm by 15%.

When Uber first introduced the concept of ride-hailing, the company single-handedly led a revolution in the transportation industry-one that is still ongoing.

"If you're not planting the seeds for 5-10 years out, you have no company in five to 10 years", Holden said at the summit.

Al Tayer said the RTA is testing the aerial vehicles but will soon set up a budget to buy these autonomous vehicles before starting the service.

Holden acknowledged "UberAir" would be dependent on creation of new vertical takeoff and landing technology enabling aircraft to rely on electric propulsion to reduce the cost, noise and overall shortcomings of helicopters.

The vehicle is fitted with eight main propellers, and in case of any failure in the first propeller, there would be seven other propellers ready to complete the flight.
