Google Settles Italian Tax Fight For $334 Million

Italian authorities alleged last year that the company avoided paying taxes on €1 billion worth of country-specific revenue during a four-year period beginning in 2009.

"We have also begun the process of drawing up an agreement that will ensure Google pays the correct taxes in Italy in the future", the country's tax authority commented. The agreement covers the period under investigation, as well as 2014-2015 and 2002-2006.

"We remain committed to Italy and will continue to help grow the online ecosystem, " the tech giant confirmed in a statement.

The US-based company has previously said it complied with tax rules in all the countries it operates in.

'This latter point applies the Italian tax code in a way in which the UK's diverted profits tax (unfortunately named the Google Tax) doesn't'. France's finance minister Michel Sapin said past year that he won't negotiate a deal with Google, but will instead pursue legal action.

The French government said it wanted to make it more attractive for foreign businesses looking for a new European location after Brexit.
