Indian police detain 3 in beating death of Muslim man

In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, a man named Ghulam Ahmed was allegedly beaten to death by six members of Hindu Yuva Vahini in Bulandshahr's Sohi village on Tuesday.

After the incident, tension is prevailing in the village.

At their steel and timber shop on a busy Pahasu city lane, Honey Raghav's brother confirmed to NDTV that he was indeed a member of Hindu Yuva Vahini.

The spokesman of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, P.K. Mall, denied that any members of Adityanath's youth force had been involved in the attack.

The assailants reportedly alleged that Mohammad's neighbor, 19-year-old Yusuf, had allegedly abducted a Hindu girl last week.

"They used to come wearing saffron and harass us, asking us to find out where the boy had gone", he said.

For the past few years, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its affiliated organisations have carried out a systematic propaganda campaign alleging the existence of a Muslim plot to seduce and convert Hindu girls. "They threatened that they would remove all Muslim families from the village if the girl was not found in a day or two".

A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against six activists of the HYV outfit, three of whom were arrested on Wednesday, May 3.

Ghulam Mohammad's family has accused the Hindu Yuva Vahini a right-wing group, of committing the crime. The group had visited the village on Tuesday, May 2, morning too, Vakeel Ahmad said, which is when they attacked Ghulam Ahmad as they spotted him outside the mango orchard on their way back.

However, at the regular Home Department press briefing, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Aditya Mishra appeared to be striking a different note as he said the incident should not be seen from "communal point of view" and "associating any particular organisation with the incident is not right".

According to Dainik Jagran, Hindu residents and shopkeepers in Zahriabad, another town in Bulandshahr district, staged a dharna to demand police action in another case of elopement of a Hindu girl with a Muslim boy. Bulandshahr Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muniraj G said the police were "trying to verify if Ghulam Mohammad's murder has any connection to the case of abduction of a girl lodged against Yusuf of Sohi village".
