Miss USA pageant kicks off in Las Vegas

The victor of Sunday's 2017 Miss USA competition held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on the Las Vegas Strip will go on to compete in the Miss Universe contest.

A 25-year-old scientist representing the District of Columbia was crowned victor of the Miss USA pageant on Sunday, the second consecutive year that the contestant from the nation's capital won the annual competition.

According to the Miss USA website, McCullough said her title would allow her to be an ambassador in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field for many children, students and women.

The Miss USA pageant on Sunday touted American diversity, and chose an African-American chemist with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to wear the crown.

McCullough was born in Naples, Italy, and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

As part of her prize, McCullough will move into a luxury NYC apartment, have access to a her own fully paid wardrobe and go on to represent U.S. at the annual Miss Universe contest.

The runner-up was Miss New Jersey Chhavi Verg. "I don't really want to consider myself - try not to consider myself like this die hard, you know, like, oh, I don't really care about men, but one thing I want to say, though, women, we are just as equal as men when it comes to opportunity in the workplace", McCullough responded.

"As Miss USA, I would love to be able to be that inspiration for our immigrant community", Linnette De Los Santos, who emigrated with her family from the Dominican Republic when she was 5, told The Associated Press days ahead of the competition.
