AT&T workers start 3-day strike in contract impasse

AT&T Wireless workers in ME are joining a nationwide strike by the Communications Workers of America against the company in an attempt to win better terms in stalled contract negotiations. They said they're striking over wages, benefits and most importantly, job security.

As of 3 p.m., the company decided they may close stores for the weekend because they don't have the employees to work, said Don Trementozzi, the union's Local 1400 president.

The company and the union have held contract negotiations for almost four months of bargaining, according to the statement, which said workers are fighting for wage increases to cover rising healthcare costs, basic job security, affordable healthcare, and a fair scheduling policy.

White House goes blue to honor nation's police officers
Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1791, more than 21,000 USA law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice. In our region, Pennsylvania has lost 854 officers, OH has lost 791 officers and West Virginia has lost 180 officers.

This weekend's strike comes almost two months after 17,000 AT&T workers in Nevada and California walked off the job. After a one-day strike, AT&T agreed not to require technicians to perform work assignments outside of their expertise.

Employees at AT&T cellphone stores could walk off the job today if they don't come to a labor agreement with the company by 3 p.m.

AT&T is also the only telecom company with a major union presence in its wireless business, which the company says makes it harder to compete. The walkout would mark the first time AT&T Mobility workers go on strike, potentially disrupting a large number of retail stores across the country this weekend.

"AT&T doesn't want to bargain with us, so we're taking a stand. This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now-a fair contract-and we'll settle for nothing less".

"This is the largest walkout in the USA since Verizon workers went on strike a year ago. Eastern Time on Friday, workers will be off the job and onto picket lines across the country".

"They're trying to close up corporate stores to open up authorized retailer stores".
