Bill Cosby Jury Drills Down on His Deposition Testimony

Bill Cosby arrives for his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown Pa. Tuesday

The jury in the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial will enter its second day of deliberations this morning, after both the defense and prosecution gave their closing arguments on Monday.

The panel of seven men and five women deliberated for four hours on Monday evening to determine the fate of the 79-year-old star, charged with three felony counts of aggravated sexual assault.

More than 50 women have come forward with decades-old allegations of sexual misconduct in recent years, but Cosby's representatives have always maintained his innocence.

The jury also asked to rehear the testimony of a police officer who was present in 2005 when Andrea Constand first reported the 2004 incident and reviewed portions of sworn depositions that Cosby gave more than a decade ago. (Cosby was once a fixture at Temple events.) But he has also been accused by more than 60 women of rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault and other crimes. On Monday, he urged the jury to reject the idea that Constand's sexual encounter with Cosby had been consensual.

Andrea Constand, right, leaves the courtroom after closing arguments in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa., Monday, June 12, 2017.

Andrea Constand claims the USA comedian drugged and molested her at his Philadelphia home in 2004.

The defense focused on inconsistencies in Constand's statements about certain details of the alleged assault and pointed out that she remained in contact with Cosby for months afterward. Cosby has denied all accusations against him. His wife, Camille, attended for the first time on Monday.

And all along, they said Constand was a willing romantic partner. Those depositions became the basis of the prosecution in this case, when the seal on them was lifted in 2015 and the prosecutors got wind that they included admissions by Cosby that the routinely got Quaaludes in the '70s with the express goal of incapacitating young women so that he could have sex with them.

"Think about that, in terms of the courage Andrea Constand has shown", Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said in closing arguments as Constand sat with detectives, her mother and other accusers in the front row. Reluctantly, she said, she took the pills because she trusted him as a friend and mentor, but soon, she felt woozy and had blurry vision.

She said Cosby gave her three pills and wine before touching her breasts, putting his fingers in her vagina and putting her hand on his erect penis after she sought his advice about moving to Canada and switching careers. "And I went upstairs and I went into my pack and I broke one whole one and brought a half down and told her to take it". She also revised her account of the circumstances of the alleged assault, saying it took place when she went to Cosby's house for career advice in January 2004-not after a dinner out.

But the high-powered defense team called just one witness to the stand and rested their case in just a handful of minutes. He confirmed that Constand had visited Cosby's room at a CT casino before the alleged attack.
