Ex-UFC fighter in critical condition after boxing match

Sportsnet's James Lynch reported Saturday that former UFC fighter Tim Hague is in the intensive care unit with a serious brain injury.

An Edmonton MMA fighter who was left in critical condition after being knocked out during a boxing match on Friday has died, his family has confirmed.

Tim Hague stepped in at short notice to take on Adam Braidwood at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton on Friday night.

After being hit right in the face, Hague landed face first on the mat and his head bounced off the canvas - prompting immediate concern from medical officials in the arena.

"It is with incredible sadness, sorrow and heartbreak to report that Tim has passed away today". According to various reports, Hague was clearly not right backstage and was rushed to the hospital.

A former UFC fighter who was reportedly knocked out in a boxing event in Edmonton remains in hospital. "We will miss him with so greatly", Neil wrote.

"The 6ft 4", 265lb Hague joined the UFC in 2009 after compiling a solid 9-1 record and would instantly rack up a submission win over Pat Barry, but his time in the Octagon is most remembered for his next fight, when he suffered a brutal seven second KO loss to Todd Duffee.

Neil says in her statement that Hague's immediate family is now with him, and that they are asking for prayers and privacy at this bad and hard time.

Alarmingly, earlier this year Hague was also competing in what's known as "superboxing" bouts - essentially boxing with MMA gloves, and was known to have been KO'd in just 40 seconds as recently as April 7th.
