Putin said that the situation in the Korean peninsula has deteriorated beyond anyone's imagination and things could get worse.

In his published comments, Putin said the situation was "balancing on the brink of a large-scale conflict".

Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that the ongoing standoff between belligerent North Korea and the United States could lead to large-scale conflict.

"In Russia's opinion the calculation that it is possible to halt North Korea's nuclear missile programmes exclusively by putting pressure on Pyongyang is erroneous and futile", Putin wrote.

The agency added that the US and South Korea were "taken aback" by North Korea's recent missile launch, the country's "first military operation in the Pacific".
