US Open: Petra Kvitova's win is match of the tournament

Venus Williams says "it's a blessing" to see Petra Kvitova playing well after a home-invasion knife attack a year ago severely injured her left hand.

The picture - we can't confirm its authenticity but she has not tweeted an objection - is ostensibly from last December when an intruder entered her apartment and threatened her with a knife till she fought him off but not before receiving deep cuts on every finger.

Muguruza, the No 3 seed, had lost only nine games in her first three matches, but was outhit and outplayed as Kvitova struck the ball with stunning power.

In Sharapova's first Slam since she tested positive for the banned blood booster meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open, she ousted second-ranked Simona Halep in the first round and served notice to any contender her game remains formidable. But at 37 and with seven Grand Slam titles to her name, those are footnotes to major wins, and it's tough to get motivated for footnotes.

Kvitova's game is as natural as she is. "It is complicated when she hits lots of aces, or just strong serves", Muguruza said. She needed surgery on her racket-holding hand and rejoined the tour at the French Open in May.

Alphons Kannanthanam becomes Union Minister, Kerala CM hails elevation of 'old friend'
Venkaiah Naidu was elected Vice-President and the party may consider him in one of those seats. On the face of it, the comments by Alphons would appear as being far from reality.

Action is underway on Day 5, with two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova facing 18th-seeded Caroline Garcia in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Gabby also had nothing but praise for her Czech opponent.

Shapovalov was trying to become the youngest male quarterfinalist at Flushing Meadows since Andre Agassi in 1988, but he wasted a 5-2 lead and three set points in the opener, and finished with 55 unforced errors.

The Czech star was slow off the mark against Muguruza following a loose start on Arthur Ashe, handing the third seed two break-point opportunities. Considering that the 23 year-old Spanish player is the only one of the three to win a grand slam, and she's played sensationally all summer, the promotion would be a nice consolation prize to losing to an inspiring Kvitova.

She is in the quarterfinals in NY for only the second time in 10 tournament appearances; the other such run came in 2015, when Kvitova lost at that stage to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

Xiaomi says that the upcoming device will be from a new series

With the Czech double-faulting twice Muguruza had three break points but was unable to take any of them. Playing with well-controlled aggression, Muguruza placed her serves well and forced Kvitova to be on the defense for a 2-1 lead. "It means a lot, it's an incredible night to play in front of a great crowd", Kvitova said in her on-court interview on Sunday. "That was one of the motivations for me to come back".

'I didn't really play these kind of great players so far [in my comeback]. "There's no doubt that not playing those matches certainly cost me today". "I don't get nervous or tight because I have to defend points or because I won a tournament a year ago".

At those tournaments, as Williams walked away from her final match, she was able to look ahead to another Slam just around the corner.

In the past this has never been Kvitova's favourite tournament.
