Tropical Storm Katia Weakens As It Enters Mexico

Hurricane Katia strengthens to Category 2 as it nears Mexico

Tropical Storm Katia made landfall in Mexico while Hurricanes Irma and Jose moved through the Atlantic. At 8 a.m. ET Saturday, Katia had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour.

The US National Hurricane Centre said that as a depression, Katia was blowing maximum sustained winds of almost 35 miles per hour and should dissipate over the mountains of central eastern Mexico later on Saturday.

Hurricane Katia, the sixth hurricane of the 2017 season, is expected to make landfall in Mexico early Saturday morning.

US, Japanese Defense Leaders Condemn North Korean Nuke Test
A THAAD battery normally consists of six launchers, but only two have been operational so far at the site in rural Seongju. Japan on the other hand has supported the plans, saying it will contribute to peace and stability.

As Mexican authorities rushed supplies and help to the regions most battered by the quake, Hurricane Katia struck the east coast of Mexico early Saturday as a Category 1 storm.

It has maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour with higher gusts and is expected to continue strengthening Friday. The storm is about 135 miles south-southeast of Tampico, Mexico, and about 110 miles northwest of Veracruz, Mexico.

One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Mexico and a raging hurricane have dealt a devastating one-two punch to the country, killing at least 71 people.

FSU's Deondre Francois suffers late leg injury vs Alabama; severity unknown
When Tide running backs Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris tried to run up the middle, there was practically nowhere for them to go. With the impressive victory Alabama is certain to maintain its hold at the No. 1 ranking, and it hosts Fresno State next week.

Luis Felipe Puente, head of Mexico's national emergency services, said this week that Katia has "worrying characteristics" because it is very slow-moving and could dump a lot of rain on areas that have been saturated in recent weeks.

Katia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches over northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo, and Puebla. Isolated maximum amounts of 25 inches are possible in northern Veracruz, eastern Hidalgo, Puebla and San Luis Potosi. No tropical storm watches remain in effect, either.

The torrential rainfall from Katia - now a category 1 hurricane - may cause "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, especially in areas of mountainous terrain", it said.
