Afghans protest ongoing violence in Myanmar

A Rohingya refugee in Bangladesh

Almost 300,000 Rohingya Muslim have fled to Bangladesh and 30,000 non-Muslim civilians have been displaced inside Myanmar after the military launched a counter-offensive following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on police posts and an army base on August 25.

The resolution called upon Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to take immediate steps to stop the atrocities being committed in Myanmar where her party is in power.

But The Sunday Times newspaper reported last week that Suu Kyi's security adviser said "friendly countries" would prevent any criticism of Burma. "She must be held accountable and tried", said party spokesman KM Atiqur Rahman.

Up to 50 people attended the protest against the persecution of Muslim people in the country.

Fresh violence erupted in Rakhine state almost two weeks ago when security forces launched an operation against the Rohingya.

As a unit, they functioned real well and reminded me of OR defenses of the past when they were a 3-4 team when Chip was here. "There were a few mental mistakes". "I do like revisiting that history because I appreciated it so much".

Many carry documents from their life back in Myanmar, wrapped in layers of plastic to protect them from the rain.

Refugees' accounts of the latest wave of violence in Rakhine have typically described shootings by soldiers and arson attacks on villages, but there are at least several cases that point to anti-personnel mines or other explosives as the cause of injuries on the border with Bangladesh, where 300,000 Rohingya have fled in the past two weeks. The government of Myanmar denies citizenship rights to the Rohingya and claims instead that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Sectarian violence between the Rohingya and local Buddhist communities broke out in 2012, leaving more than 100 dead and the state segregated along religious lines.

Bangladeshi officials and Amnesty researchers believe new explosives have been recently planted, including one that the rights group said blew off a Bangladeshi farmer's leg and another that wounded a Rohingya man. Instead of playing a meaningful role in stopping the Burman perpetrators of violence, she rejected the reports of ethnic cleansing of Rohingya community.

But in October 2016 a small and previously unknown militant group - the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) - staged a series of well coordinated and deadly attacks on security forces.

It also called upon the United Nations to take the lead in stopping immediately the cold blooded and callous genocide of Rohingya Muslims.

But detractors say Suu Kyi is one of the few people with the mass appeal and moral authority in Myanmar to swim against the tide on the issue.

Bhushan had appraised the court that approximately 40,000 Rohingya Muslims residing in India were registered with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
