California 'Sanctuary State' Bill Approved on Legislature's Last Day

California Gov. Jerry Brown left and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon D Los Angeles

California lawmakers voted to become a sanctuary state, tussled over hot-button environmental issues and urged other states to refuse to cooperate with President Donald Trump's Election Integrity Commission as their legislative year ended early on Saturday.

The California Values Act would forbid state and local law enforcement agencies from providing information to or acting as the deputies for federal immigration authorities.

The measure cleared the Legislature with support only from Democrats over the objection of Republicans who it will protect criminals and make it harder for law-enforcement to keep people safe.

On the Senate floor minutes before 2 a.m. Saturday, De Leon said the changes were reasonable, and reflected a powerful compromise between law enforcement officials and advocates. It also would limit police cooperation with immigration officers.

USA asks China, Russia to take action against N Korea
Britain said the Libya talks would focus on "how to break the political deadlock" and build support for the U.N.'s efforts. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a meeting with U.K.

"Given their limited resources, I agree that state and local law enforcement should not be doing the jobs of federal immigration agents", said Bates.

Multiple cities have sought to defy President Trump's immigration enforcement policies, which require that state and local communities allow federal immigration access to detention facilities and provide 48 hours notice before they release an illegal alien wanted by federal authorities.

California already has some of the most protective laws in the country for immigrants detained by law enforcement. The bill-which Wiener introduced the skeleton of mere hours after his Sacramento swearing-in last year-would essentially force California cities to approve a certain amount of new housing each year, one way or another.

Acting Director Thomas Homan says in a statement Saturday that the legislation "serves to codify a risky policy that deliberately obstructs our country's immigration laws".

The California Police Chiefs Association is neutral on the bill, but the California State Sheriffs' Association opposes it.

The bills all need Senate approval on Friday.

This was the first year of the Legislature's two-year session.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions can not follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to so-called sanctuary cities for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies.
